Music is a central part of our Worship Services at Emmanuel.
Mr. Kenyon Scott, Organist and Choirmaster, has led the musical life of Emmanuel since 1996.
A native of Pittsylvania County, Mr. Scott received a bachelor’s degree in history, as well as an M. Ed., from the University of Virginia where he also served as a continuo player (on both organ and harpsichord) for the school’s Collegium Musicum.
Although not a concert musician, Mr. Scott has organized and played a number of musical programs during his tenure at Emmanuel, including performances for the Pittsylvania Historical Society, the annual Christmas in Historic Chatham festivities, and a full-length recital on the Moller organ at Chatham Presbyterian Church.

The S.S. Hamill Organ, a two-manual-and-pedal, eleven rank pipe organ provides instrumental music as well as accompaniment for Choir and congregational hymns.
The organ was originally built in 1865 by S.S. Hamill for the Congregational Church of Groveland, Massachusetts, where it served its first congregation for 43 years.
The organ’s gentle and unforced voice, characteristic of mid-nineteenth century New England organ design, is reminiscent of English organ building practices of the late eighteenth century. Its singing diapasons, lilting flutes, mild strings, and pungent reed characterize its music and delight its audience.

Emmanuel’s Steinway piano will be 100 years old in May 2009. Completed on May 7, 1909, the Steinway Grand was a graduation present for Edna Hunt (Epperson) that year upon her graduation in music from Chatham Episcopal Institute (Chatham Hall).
Edna was a long-time pianist at Emmanuel, and she donated
the piano to the Parish upon her death in 1963.
