The Sixteenth Sunday After Pentecost
During a recent conversation with Gene LeCouteur about the Farmers Market at St. Stephen's, the word "evangelism" came up. It led me to think of an incongruity: So many of us regard St. Stephen's as deeply enriching, even life sustaining, but we don't take the step of inviting others to experience this environment that we agree is special.
This is one reason the Farmers Market, the Celtic Service, Evensong, and Compline are so important. All of these offerings provide non-intimidating entry points for others to experience St. Stephen's, and perhaps more importantly, for us as Episcopalians - uncomfortable as we tend to be with evangelism - to feel okay about inviting others to experience what we find to be so vital.
We should be particularly attentive to, and supportive of, these entry-point ministries. They just might be what God uses as the avenues for those who have not yet turned to him for help.
