The Gospel - John 20:19-31

Today's Gospel story is most often thought of as the story of Doubting Thomas - the disciple who would not believe that Jesus had risen lest he personally see and touch Jesus' nail-scarred hands, and place his hand into the wound in Jesus' side.
Thomas' story is an important one, and he is often unfairly maligned. After all, he was only asking to see what the other disciples had already seen!
But there is another story here which has to do with why the disciples were gathered in a locked room.
The Gospel story says that they were hiding in fear of the Jews. But there is no evidence that the Jews, or the Romans, or anyone else for that matter, was looking for them. After all, they had fled when Jesus was arrested and they had watched the crucifixion from afar - from the top of a distant hill.
