Kenyon Scott has rejoined Emmanuel as Organist and Choirmaster effective September 4th. Kenyon previously served as our Organist and Choirmaster from 1996 through 2011. Please join us in welcoming Kenyon back to Emmanuel!

Emmanuel Calls the Reverend Dr. Regina Christianson

The Vestry of Emmanuel is pleased to announce that The Reverend Dr. Regina Christianson has accepted our call to become Priest in Charge at Emmanuel. She is in the process of moving from Vermont to Chatham and is expected to begin her ministry at Emmanuel on September 11. Dr. Christianson will also serve as Episcopal Chaplain at Chatham Hall. Her husband, Stephen Whitely, will be teaching private music lessons in Chatham.

Dr. Christianson most recently served as rector of Calvary Episcopal Church in Underhill, Vermont.

Holy Week Services

We are all invited to Chatham's two ecumenical services this Holy Week:

 

• Maundy Thursday 7:00 p.m. This Tenebrae service will be at Chatham Presbyterian.

• Good Friday 7:00 at Concord United Methodist Church (intersection of Tightsqueeze/Irish and Concord Roads) Concord's new pastor, Tobias Lutz, who spoke at the final ecumenical Lenten supper last week, will lead the Good Friday worship.

The Chatham Concert Series will close the season this Sunday afternoon, February 28 at 3:00, with a beautiful program of Romantic music and song. The concert venue is Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Chatham.

Featuring a quintet of some of Virginia’s finest musicians and a world-renowned tenor, this chamber music concert will be a real treat.

One of the best-loved chamber music compositions, Czech Romantic Composer Antonin Dvorak’s Quintet for Piano and Strings, will carry the weight of half the program.

Anchored by the piano of Judith Clark, Martin Irving and Kevin Matheson will play violin in the quintet, Bryan Matheson the viola, and Julia Goudimova the cello.

In a fortunate addition to the program, and balancing the instruments of the Dvorak quintet, famed tenor Robert Chafin will perform songs by the modern-era English Composer Ralph Vaughan Williams as well as French Romantic Composer, Ernest Chausson.

Chatham violin student Staley Lyle has been invited to play one piece, Jean-Baptiste Accolay’s Concerto in A minor.

Chatham First will host a post-concert reception allowing musicians and concert goers to visit in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The concert will be held at Emmanuel, 66 N. Main Street in Chatham. Admission is by donation for the musicians.

Emmanuel Annual Meeting Elects New Vestry Members

Emmanuel parishioners elected two new vestry members at the Annual Meeting following the Eucharist on December 13th. Walter Coles and Langhorne Jones were elected to serve three-year terms beginning January 1, 2016. They succeed Richard Camp, John Geyer, and Dorothy Diggs whose terms expire at the end of 2015. The Annual Meeting also voted to accept the Vestry's recommendation that the size of the Vestry be reduced from nine to six over the next three years.

Chatham Concert Series Announces 2015-16 Season at Emmanuel

The Chatham Concert Series is pleased to announce the eighth season for the series!

SAVE the DATE - Parish Picnic: Oct. 18th

Walter and Alice Coles will host the annual picnic on the lawn at Coles Hill on October 18, 2015.

Eucharist Service will be held at Coles Hill at 11:00 am prior to the annual picnic.

Father Heying Accepts Call to Saint Paul's Church in Abbeville, Louisiana

Father R Christopher Heying, Rector at Emmanuel since October 2012, has accepted a call to be the rector of Saint Paul's Church in Abbeville, Louisiana beginning 1 August 2015.

 

He will celebrate the eucharist at Emmanuel on two remaining Sundays, 14 June and 5 July, with the latter being his final Sunday at Emmanuel Church.

 

In announcing his resignation at Emmanuel, Father Heying said:

 

"My family and I have been blessed during our time at Emmanuel, and you have allowed me to grow as a priest, pastor, and person, for which I am profoundly grateful. We have come to appreciate the beauty of this community and county, and I have delighted in your commitment to ecumenical ministry and fellowship with our friends at Chatham Baptist, Chatham Presbyterian, and Watson United Methodist churches.

 

We have done some good and holy things together, and even in and through difficulty I believe we have often come to deepen our respect for one another.

 

Following my departure, you will be ably served by your vestry and others, and I know that you will support their ministry by opening your heart to them and allowing them to minister to you."

Water Leak Cancels Coffee Hour 12.28.2014

Some time between the lovely reception that followed the Christmas Eve Mass and 2 p.m. on Christmas day when I came to the office, a leak occurred in the pipe(s) between the bathrooms in the parish hall and caused a goodly amount of water to flow from the kitchen into my office. 

 

The pipe will be repaired at our expense (which should be minimal) and the church's insurance will cover all other costs, less our $500 deductible for the insurance-recommended profession drying, etc., and for any necessary repairs, including replacement carpet should that be required.

 

Servicemaster's drying process of carpet, cabinets, etc., will take place over the next three days to conclude on Monday, with major equipment stretched from my office into the kitchen. 

 

Therefore, we will NOT have coffee hour following the service on Sunday at 11 a.m., lest anyone trip over wires in the kitchen and bathrooms, etc.

Chatham Thanksgiving Service, Wed., Nov. 19 at Chatham Baptist

Please join us for the ecumenical Chatham Thanksgiving Service to be held at Chatham Baptist this Wednesday, November 19th. The meal begins at 5:30 (catered by Kim Chumley at $6 per 12 and up and $4 under 12).  The service around the tables is 6:15 to 7, with the Rev. Bill Mackey-Wisor of Watson Memorial UMC preaching and the Chatham Baptist Church providing music. 

The offering will benefit the CHATHAM MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION, which is sorely in need of additional funding to help those who are in need right here in our community. If you are unable to attend, you can still make a donation (payable to Chatham Ministerial Association) and Fr Chris will deliver it to Glen Shelton who serves as treasurer.  You may call Erica, Chatham Baptist (8 a.m. to noon) at 432.8003. Indication of number of adults and children is needed by noon Monday, November 17th.

We are delighted to announce that meals from your meal packaging event have been shipped in a container with 285,120 meals from our Lynchburg warehouse. The meals will be received by our in-country partner CitiHope International.

 

With 42% of the population below the poverty line, food shortage is prevalent throughout the Dominican Republic. CitiHope provides food and other resources to schools, orphanages and other needy people and takes an active role in the distribution and monitoring. CitiHope supports sustainable educational and development programs that empower locals to create strong, self-sufficient communities.

The school and orphanage programs help our country so much by creating a future of responsible citizens that contribute to the improvement of our society. Chatham Concert Series Announces 2014-15 Season

 

2014 Emmanuel Church Picnic: New Date - Saturday, September 20th

Walter and Alice Coles have graciously agreed to host the 2014 parish picnic at Coles Hill on Saturday, 20 September.

Beginning at noon there will be opportunities for persons of all ages, especially young people, to canoe, play tennis, fish, etc.

A catered dinner, prepared by Tred Hunt, will begin at 5:30 pm. There is a sign-up for the picnic in the hallway to the Parish Hall. Please let us know that you are coming and bringing kids and grandkids!

Friday Night at the Movies Continues at Emmanuel

Friday Night at the Movies continues Friday (the 13th!) at 7:00 in Emmanuel's Parish Hall with the 1955 classic, EAST OF EDEN.

Based on John Steinbeck’s novel of the same name, the film is a retelling of the Cain and Abel story in 1917-1918 Monterey, California. Directed by Elia Kazan, and with a cast including James Dean, Julie Harris, Jo Van Fleet, Raymond Massey, and Burl Ives, the film won an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and Cannes Film Festival’s Best Dramatic Film Award.

Stop Hunger Now Meal Packaging Event - May 3rd

Countless congregations, civic organizations, corporations and schools have enjoyed organizing and participating in a Stop Hunger Now meal packaging event.

What is a Meal Packaging Event?

It is an immensely fun, hands-on and rewarding experience for anyone of any age. A group of 40- 50 volunteers can package 10,000 meals in just two hours. To get started in organizing your packaging event, set a goal for the number of meals you will package and contact your local program coordinator. Start to recruit volunteers based on the number of meals you plan to package. Then you can begin to fund your event. All you need to raise is 25 cents for each meal you package.

Stop Hunger Now meals are nutritiously sound. Every dehydrated rice/soy meal is fortified with 21 essential vitamins and nutrients. Research has shown that one in three people in developing countries are adversely affected by vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Addressing the problem of hunger is the single point where we can leverage relief for all humanitarian issues.

With your support, relief organizations such as Stop Hunger Now have the means to deliver to ongoing school feeding programs that sustain lifelong change. Providing a hot meal during school gives parents an incentive to send their children to school. Through receiving a primary school education, the cycle of poverty can begin to be broken by leveraging change in many other issues including education, maternal health, childhood mortality, gender equality and combating HIV/AIDS. We currently require that our in-country partners report on the impact of the Stop Hunger Now shipments they received. Our strategic plan recognizes the challenges of getting impact reports from our in-country partners, and we are working to improve that process.

Clarinetist Alex Jones & Saturn String Quartet to Play in Chatham

Christmas and New Year’s have passed but winter’s cold, dark days have not.  On January 19 the brightness and warmth of Mozart and Brahms will brighten winter’s monotony in Chatham.

The Chatham Concert Series returns from its holiday break with Alex Jones, principal clarinetist of the Pittsburgh Philharmonic, and the Saturn String Quartet.  Jones and the string musicians will perform Mozart and Brahms Quintets for Clarinet & Strings.

“We wanted to bring symphonic music to Chatham,” said Chatham Concert Series Artistic Director Kevin Matheson.  “Naturally we’re limited in the number of performers we can bring, but these pieces offer a depth beyond the traditional chamber repertoire.  They have the feel of a symphonic concert.”

Composing his Quintet in A Major in 1789, Mozart beautifully blended styles he used for opera, concerto and string quartet.  Brahms, whose chamber music is unsurpassed, wrote Quintet in B Minor, considered one of his finest compositions, in 1891, or 102 years after the influential Mozart piece.

Alex Jones is looking forward to the concert.  “Hearing these quintets got me excited about learning the clarinet when I was in school, and I love seeing that excitement in our audiences,” he said.

Filling out the quintet with Jones’ clarinet will be the Saturn String Quartet: Kevin Matheson and Leon Kok on violin, the viola of Bryan Matheson and cello played by Kelley Mikkelsen, all of the Roanoke Symphony.

The concert will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 66 N. Main Street in Chatham at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 19.  Admission is by donation for the artists.  For more information contact Kevin Matheson at kstrings1@hotmail.com or 540-382-9624.

Chatham Concert Series: A Night at the Movies with the Rainier Trio, Oct. 4th

Please join the Chatham Concert Series to celebrate its sixth season with “A Night at the Movies” on Friday evening, October 4 at 7:00 pm.
