Beginning this Sunday, we will stop in-person worship for the next few weeks. We are following guidelines set by our diocesan medical advisory panel. This panel is composed of doctors, nurses, physicians’ assistants, nurse practitioners, epidemiologists, and one attorney. The members are from around the diocese, including people from our end of the diocese!
And so, with sorrowful hearts but mindful of our care for and stewardship of the people of Emmanuel, your vestry and I have made the decision to stop in person worship. This Sunday we will hold our drive-in worship as well as have a few chairs in the yard, 10' apart. If you choose to come and sit in the yard, you must wear a mask. There will also be a worship video posted on our Facebook page, later in the day, or at the latest, Monday morning.
Even if you have not joined Facebook, you can view our page:

After a beautiful Sunday service last week, when we were blessed with the beautiful voice of Charlotte Paris singing, this will be a different experience. But we will be together with God.
So, begin Advent with us.

Tomorrow the church remembers Francis of Assisi. His love of all creatures, great and small, lead to the tradition of blessing our pets on this day.
So we invite you to bring your pets (please, no snakes.)
Our service of Holy Communion will be offered as both drive-in church and church in the yard!
Chairs will be placed in the yard for those who wish to be outside of your car.
We celebrate God's blessings of our pets, remembering that everything belongs to God and we are blessed by the gift of companionship pets bring to our lives.

In the best interest of our health and safety, the vestry and I have decided to continue with drive-in church for the foreseeable future. We know this announcement will disappoint some who were looking forward to coming back inside. But new statistics have caused us to reconsider.
As we walk the Jesus story with Matthew’s gospel in this later part of the Pentecost season, the gospel readings will speak more and more about Jesus’ sacrificial love. In this COVIDTIDE season of our life together, our walk of love has a sacrificial component to it as well. We are having to sacrifice many things that we feel important for identifying us as the people of Emmanuel, chiefly worshipping inside.
But in this time, we must be mindful of how we are good care takers of each other.
We are not only protecting those present but also those with whom they will have contact.
So worship will continue to be different. We strive to make changes that do not strip away all of what we believe about the power of our liturgy to mold and transform us a people of God. We are having to put some new wine into these old skins! And I know most of us do not like it. I do not as well.
However, the vestry and I feel we must be careful about calling us back together. Hospitalizations have recently gone up and there is an uptick of the spread once again in our area.
In this “Covidtide” the indoors criteria is about not only duration and droplets but also aerosol transmission. So, the changes we make, and will make, will attend to that criteria. All these changes are to help us be safer and slow the spread of this virus.
This concern for the health of those who may come into contact with us is a way we Love Godand each other. We do so, yes, out of an abundance of caution but more so out of an abundance of Christian love for our each other; for our Neighbor.
Being attentive to what we do, and what we are asked to do, is never more important. We must commit ourselves to new and intentional ways of being together. This is walking in love.
And may the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, keep us all.
So come tomorrow and drive-in. Come help us reflect on the mind of Christ.
Come in joy to meet the Lord! (Click on this link to hear a beautiful version of this hymn!

The Roanoke Ballet Theatre is a company of professional dancers from across the country, who have undergone years of extensive training and danced professionally with other companies. Their full performance schedule includes main stage shows, in-studio Black Box series, and traveling collaborations throughout Roanoke and surrounding communities. The company also provides an opportunity for the dancers to work alongside the staff and students of Roanoke Ballet Theatre’s Youth Ballet.
The Chatham Hall Dance Ensemble will take the stage for “Connections,” choreographed to Gabriel Faure’s famous Sicilienne by their instructor Donna Franklin.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to support the concert series. Chatham Hall is catering a reception afterwards where the audience can meet the dancers and musicians after the performance.

On Friday, March 8th the Chatham Concert Series continues with an exciting program featuring pianist Judith Clark and Bryan, Kevin and Elizabeth Matheson.
Over the centuries, the greatest violinists wrote or arranged music to show off their talents and dazzle the audience. Jascha Heifetz adapted Rimsky-Korsakov’s famous “Flight of the Bumble Bee” and the Mexican serenade “Estrellita” for violin, Fritz Kreisler arranged deFalla’s “Spanish Dance,” and Pablo de Sarasate wrote “Zigeunerweisen” or “Gypsy Airs."
The twentieth century violist William Primrose transcribed Weber’s “Andante & Hungarian Rondo” and “Jamaican Rumba” by Arthur Benjamin to help increase the virtuoso viola repertoire. Other works on the program are Robert Schumann’s romantic “Fairy-Tale Pictures” for viola and piano and Bela Bartok’s ever popular “Romanian Folk Dances” for violin and piano. Judith Clark will perform Franz Liszt’s Grand Etude “La Campanella” based on Paganini’s famous violin piece.
Join fellow concert fans and the musicians to enjoy a glass of wine, chocolate truffles, mini fruit kabobs and marinated mozzarella and tomato skewers. The Chatham First sponsored receptions are a tradition not to miss!
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to support the concerts. Come Friday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m. to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 66 N. Main St. in Chatham.
The Chatham Concert Series would like to thank all of the individual sponsors who have made this season possible! Mr. and Mrs. William Black, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore E. Bruning, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Richard Camp, Mr. and Mrs. John Collins, Mr. Rick Dixon, Capt. Cameron A. Gillespie, MD and Tomoko U. Gillespie, Dr. Peyton and Lucy Moore, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Rogers.
