In the best interest of our health and safety, the vestry and I have decided to continue with drive-in church for the foreseeable future. We know this announcement will disappoint some who were looking forward to coming back inside. But new statistics have caused us to reconsider.
As we walk the Jesus story with Matthew’s gospel in this later part of the Pentecost season, the gospel readings will speak more and more about Jesus’ sacrificial love. In this COVIDTIDE season of our life together, our walk of love has a sacrificial component to it as well. We are having to sacrifice many things that we feel important for identifying us as the people of Emmanuel, chiefly worshipping inside.
But in this time, we must be mindful of how we are good care takers of each other.
We are not only protecting those present but also those with whom they will have contact.
So worship will continue to be different. We strive to make changes that do not strip away all of what we believe about the power of our liturgy to mold and transform us a people of God. We are having to put some new wine into these old skins! And I know most of us do not like it. I do not as well.
However, the vestry and I feel we must be careful about calling us back together. Hospitalizations have recently gone up and there is an uptick of the spread once again in our area.
In this “Covidtide” the indoors criteria is about not only duration and droplets but also aerosol transmission. So, the changes we make, and will make, will attend to that criteria. All these changes are to help us be safer and slow the spread of this virus.
This concern for the health of those who may come into contact with us is a way we Love Godand each other. We do so, yes, out of an abundance of caution but more so out of an abundance of Christian love for our each other; for our Neighbor.
Being attentive to what we do, and what we are asked to do, is never more important. We must commit ourselves to new and intentional ways of being together. This is walking in love.
And may the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, keep us all.
So come tomorrow and drive-in. Come help us reflect on the mind of Christ.
Come in joy to meet the Lord! (Click on this link to hear a beautiful version of this hymn!

Emmanuel recently welcomed the Reverend Dr. Regina Christianson as its new priest-in-charge.
Dr. Christianson comes to Chatham from Jericho & Underhill, Vermont where she served Calvary Episcopal Church, founded the Green Mountain Children’s Choir, led church music workshops, was an active member of the board for the local ecumenical food shelf and emergency fund, facilitated the local grief group, led Celtic spirituality retreats, and advised community clergy and others about mental health issues.
Regina began her career as a music teacher in an Episcopal Independent School in New York City, St. Hilda’s and St. Hugh’s. At that time she was a Sister in the Community of the Holy Spirit, the Episcopal Religious Order that founded, partly staffed, and owned the school during those years.
After leaving the Order, Regina became a private music educator and professional musician in New York City. Following several years of teaching and performing, she was invited to be the harpist-in-residence at the Trapp Family Lodge, Stowe, VT, owned by the Von Trapps of Sound of Music Fame.
Regina's study in church history and spirituality led to her Master’s and Doctoral thesis on Hildegard of Bingen, a 12th century mystic, theologian, and composer, receiving both her M. Div. and D. Min. from the Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge, Mass., well known for its pastoral orientation.
Dr. Christianson is also an experienced interfaith mental health chaplain. She is currently completing her qualification for certification as a Spiritual Director.
Regina met her husband, Stephen Whiteley, M. Mus., when they both sang as professional choir members at St. James’ Episcopal Church, Madison Avenue, where they were later married. They love to garden, travel, go camping, listen to the ocean, and make music together.
Dr. Christianson will also serve as Episcopal Chaplain at Chatham Hall. She may be reached by email at [email protected].

Download Instructed Eucharist Emmanuel-1
During the morning service on September 15, Emmanuel held an INSTRUCTED EUCHARIST during which Father Heying made some remarks about our liturgy and what we do in the Eucharist.
The attached document has considerable information about the worship service, the vestments, the altar ware and linens, pious gestures used by the priest, etc.
The side-by-side commentary with the liturgy was intended to be helpful to all in gaining not so much an "understanding" of the service as a deeper "appreciation" for this ancient liturgy we call by various names.

Church
Publishing Incorporated has successfully launched two new eBook editions
of the Book of Common Prayer to accommodate a variety of applications
and most eReader platforms, including all versions of Kindle, Apple,
plus other devices and tablets.
"We're not the first to offer an electronic edition of the Book of Common Prayer (BCP), but we wanted to offer the best version possible in multiple formats to cover the widest range of liturgical needs," said Brother Karekin Yarian, Church Publishing's project manager - eProducts.
Church Publishing's eBook edition, available for all eReaders, contains the complete contents of the authorized 1979 Book of Common Prayer, is fully searchable, and features a built-in Table of Contents. This edition is designed to maximize content accessibility on mobile devices and tablets. However, because eBooks are designed to reflow the text according to the size of the screen of the mobile device, designing this edition to maintain the exact page layout and page numbers of the print edition "was neither possible nor desirable," Brother Karekin explained, "As such, the layout of the content may be different, depending on the device you are using."
Church Publishing also offers a PDF version of the Book of Common Prayer, which is available on the Church Publishing website. Each of these versions is hyperlinked and has bookmarking capability.
"These eBooks give Episcopalians easy access to the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, making it as close as your tablet or eBook reader. I'm delighted that Church Publishing is responding to the needs of the church in this way," said Ruth Meyers, Hodges-Haynes Professor of Liturgics at Church Divinity School of the Pacific and a member of the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music for the Episcopal Church.

Emmanuel is pleased to welcome Sally Ford as our new church organist.
Ms. Ford has been involved in church music since before she could read when she begged to be allowed to join the children's choir at her home church. She began piano at age seven and organ in high school, replacing the church organist, who had retired. She has played a diverse group of various instruments in churches over the years, including reed organs, as well as directing children's and adult choirs.
Sally studied organ at Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ, under the tutelage of James Litton (who later directed the American Boys Choir). While there she was also privileged to sing in Symphonic Choir with several symphony orchestras. She earned her degree in organ with a minor in voice and a concentration in Music Education. There she met her husband (a native of Alexandria, which later led to her coming to VA.)
A former home educator, Sally has performed vocally and instrumentally in a Celtic group as well as with her husband, a professional flutist. She dabbles in hammered dulcimer and on the recorder. She has also been a presenter at various home school functions.
Ms. Ford will assume her duties at Emmanuel on Sunday, March 4.

Prayer for Virginia Theological Seminary On Friday, Oct. 22, the chapel at Virginia Theological Seminary was lost to fire. Please keep the students, faculty, staff and alumni in your prayers as they grieve their loss and begin to move forward.Holy and gracious God, who redeems all things:we remember before you the administration, faculty, staff, students, and alumni of Virginia Theological Seminary as they grieve the loss of Immanuel Chapel.Comfort them as they mourn, strengthen them as they rebuild, and grant them the peace and healing that only you can give.Be their light in the darkness, O God, and, as you have so many times before, bring new life out of the rubble. This we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen. |

EDS Webcast: The Gender Continuum
Oct. 15 & 16 Episcopal Divinity School is hosting a two-day event focused on gender identity and sexual orientation. Questions concerning these subjects have become increasingly important in society as a whole. Gender is at the very core of our being -- the starting point of who we are, who we think we are, and who we and others think we should be. This workshop will give participants access to conceptualizing a new paradigm for human relatedness while the panel will discuss gender and orientation from theological, psychological, and legal perspectives. The Twelve Days of Christmas, and the associated
evenings of those twelve days (Twelve-tide), are the festive days beginning the
evening of Christmas Day (December 25)
through the morning of Epiphany (January 6).
The associated evenings of the twelve days begin on the evening before the
specified day. Thus, the first night of Christmas is December 25–26 and Twelfth Night is January 5–6. This period
is also known as Christmastide.
