The Chatham Concert Series brings ballet and live music together for the first time this Sunday, January 26 at 3:00pm in the VanVoorhis Hall at Chatham Hall. The Roanoke Ballet Theatre’s new choreography to Piazzolla’s famous tangos “The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” brings them to life. Other favorites including Canon in D and The Entertainer will have a new look with dance while the Rainier Trio provides live music.
The Roanoke Ballet Theatre is a company of professional dancers from across the country, who have undergone years of extensive training and danced professionally with other companies. Their full performance schedule includes main stage shows, in-studio Black Box series, and traveling collaborations throughout Roanoke and surrounding communities. The company also provides an opportunity for the dancers to work alongside the staff and students of Roanoke Ballet Theatre’s Youth Ballet.
The Chatham Hall Dance Ensemble will take the stage for “Connections,” choreographed to Gabriel Faure’s famous Sicilienne by their instructor Donna Franklin.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to support the concert series. Chatham Hall is catering a reception afterwards where the audience can meet the dancers and musicians after the performance.
VanVoorhis Hall is in a building connected to the main building. There will be signs out as well. Here is a link to the general map. On Friday, March 8th the Chatham Concert Series continues with an exciting program featuring pianist Judith Clark and Bryan, Kevin and Elizabeth Matheson.
Over the centuries, the greatest violinists wrote or arranged music to show off their talents and dazzle the audience. Jascha Heifetz adapted Rimsky-Korsakov’s famous “Flight of the Bumble Bee” and the Mexican serenade “Estrellita” for violin, Fritz Kreisler arranged deFalla’s “Spanish Dance,” and Pablo de Sarasate wrote “Zigeunerweisen” or “Gypsy Airs."
The twentieth century violist William Primrose transcribed Weber’s “Andante & Hungarian Rondo” and “Jamaican Rumba” by Arthur Benjamin to help increase the virtuoso viola repertoire. Other works on the program are Robert Schumann’s romantic “Fairy-Tale Pictures” for viola and piano and Bela Bartok’s ever popular “Romanian Folk Dances” for violin and piano. Judith Clark will perform Franz Liszt’s Grand Etude “La Campanella” based on Paganini’s famous violin piece.
Join fellow concert fans and the musicians to enjoy a glass of wine, chocolate truffles, mini fruit kabobs and marinated mozzarella and tomato skewers. The Chatham First sponsored receptions are a tradition not to miss!
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to support the concerts. Come Friday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m. to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 66 N. Main St. in Chatham.
The Chatham Concert Series would like to thank all of the individual sponsors who have made this season possible! Mr. and Mrs. William Black, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore E. Miri Yampolsky and Xak Bjerken
A husband-and-wife duo piano team from Cornell University will play a free concert open to the community at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2017 in St. Mary’s Chapel at Chatham Hall. The concert is dedicated to the memory of Frances Hallam Hurt, local author, historian, and arts patron, and is sponsored by Chatham Hall. There will be a reception in the Tea Room of the library following the concert.
Xak Bjerken, professor of piano at Cornell, and Miri Yampsolsky, senior lecturer of chamber music at Cornell, will open the concert with the Mozart Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major, K. 448. They will also perform the Rachmaninoff Suite for Two Pianos No. 2, Op. 17, along with a variety of solo works that includes Scriabin’s Ninth Sonata and pieces from Brahms Op. 116.
The couple recently played the Rachmaninoff Suite for Two Pianos at The Voice of Music in the Upper Galilee Chamber Music Festival, Israel’s oldest chamber music festival. In the upcoming year, Yampolsky will perform in New York City and Berlin with cellist Zvi Plesser, and Guy Braunstein, former concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic. Bjerken will record and premiere concertos by Stephen Hartke and Jesse Jones at Oberlin College-Conservatory, as well as perform these pieces in Ithaca, Austin, Texas, and Los Angeles.
Bjerken, born and reared in Santa Barbara, California, and Yampolsky, born in Russia and reared in Israel, were students of Leon Fleisher at Peabody Conservatory. They are co-founders and artistic directors of Mayfest, the Cornell Department of Music’s annual festival of world-class chamber music, which celebrated its tenth anniversary this year. The couple has three children: Misha, who is in high school and plays the double bass and sings; Anna, who is in middle school and plays the piano and sings; and Maya, who is in kindergarten and studies dance.
