With 42% of the population below the poverty line, food shortage is prevalent throughout the Dominican Republic. CitiHope provides food and other resources to schools, orphanages and other needy people and takes an active role in the distribution and monitoring. CitiHope supports sustainable educational and development programs that empower locals to create strong, self-sufficient communities.Citihope's country director in the Dominican Republic says,"We consider this not to be 'charity' but a real investment in humanity. The school and orphanage programs help our country so much by creating a future of responsible citizens that contribute to the improvement of our society. These children come from families that cannot supply even one meal a day for their children and don't understand the purpose of education. So the motivation comes from the food!...These SHN donations are a defining component that heals a nation, multi-dimensionally."
Thank you for generously donating your time as a volunteer with Stop Hunger Now.

Meal Packaging
_____________________________________________________________________
Countless congregations, civic organizations, corporations and schools have enjoyed organizing and participating in a Stop Hunger Now meal packaging event.
What is a Meal Packaging Event?
It is an immensely fun, hands-on and rewarding experience for anyone of any age. A group of 40- 50 volunteers can package 10,000 meals in just two hours. To get started in organizing your packaging event, set a goal for the number of meals you will package and contact your local program coordinator. Start to recruit volunteers based on the number of meals you plan to package. Then you can begin to fund your event. All you need to raise is 25 cents for each meal you package.
Stop Hunger Now meals are nutritiously sound. Every dehydrated rice/soy meal is fortified with 21 essential vitamins and nutrients. Research has shown that one in three people in developing countries are adversely affected by vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Addressing the problem of hunger is the single point where we can leverage relief for all humanitarian issues.
With your support, relief organizations such as Stop Hunger Now have the means to deliver to ongoing school feeding programs that sustain lifelong change. Providing a hot meal during school gives parents an incentive to send their children to school. Through receiving a primary school education, the cycle of poverty can begin to be broken by leveraging change in many other issues including education, maternal health, childhood mortality, gender equality and combating HIV/AIDS. We currently require that our in-country partners report on the impact of the Stop Hunger Now shipments they received. Our strategic plan recognizes the challenges of getting impact reports from our in-country partners, and we are working to improve that process.
YOU CAN HELP END WORLD HUNGER! PACK 10,000 MEALS FOR STOPHUNGERNOW.ORG ON SATURDAY, 3 MAY 2014 STARTING @ 10 A.M. IN CHATHAM BAPTIST.
LOTS OF FUN FOR PERSONS OF ALL AGES. CALL FATHER CHRIS HEYING FOR MORE INFORMATION: 434.710.0329 OR [email protected].

On Friday, February 22, Emmanuel's Parish Hall resembled a M.A.S.H. unit
as we worked with the Red Cross to sponsor a community blood drive.
Many
Emmanuel hands were on deck -- before during and after -- to get the
word out, move furniture, prepare food to restore the strength of
donors, register those who came to give the gift of life, and put the
place back in order when the drive ended.
Parishioners also
generously donated blood, giving the gift of life, and the Red Cross
representative was pleased with the number of blood donations made.
Many
thanks to all who chipped in to help those undergoing surgical
operations, cancer and other disease treatment, and those suffering
traumatic injuries.
This was a significant manifestation of the Lenten spirit!

"Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved." - Matthew 9:17 The parishes of Southern Virginia are a diverse group-urban and rural, small and large, contemporary and traditional. Together we are the Diocese of Southern Virginia. We are enriched, and at times challenged, by our differences. Yet we share a common mission and each of us brings particular, vital gifts to that mission. The world is changing at an unprecedented pace and our diocese hasn't been immune to that change. It's time to take a look at our mission, to listen and talk about who we are and what we are called to do and to be. The first step in this process is listening to the members of our congregations. Six regional meetings will be held. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. The information gathered at the meetings will be reported back once all the meetings are complete and will be the material from which our new mission will be developed. Come, listen and be heard. In order that host churches may plan appropriately, please register to attend by clicking on the meeting of your choice. Upon our return from the recent Chatham Hall service trip
to South Africa, someone asked me if I would ever go back. My answer was swift and certain - Yes, yes
and more yes!
The people on the African continent are joyful, remarkably optimistic, and spiritually vital despite the political, economic, military and cultural uncertainty that seems to be everywhere.

Shane Claiborne was a young Methodist who grew up in the
Bible Belt, became a Jesus freak, and moved to Philadelphia despite his
family's misgivings, helping the homeless there. Then in his early twenties he
boldly requested an internship with Mother Teresa in Calcutta. She simply
responded, "Come."
Besides illuminating his own faith journey, Claiborne is insightful on the huge U.S. cultural and economic divide: the problem isn't that wealthy Christians don't care about the poor, he says, it's that they simply don't know the poor.

Lay ministry highlights continuing community's growth
By Mary Frances Schjonberg January 14, 2009 [Episcopal
News Service] – excerpts:
Just more than two years after the Episcopal Diocese of
Virginia parish of the Falls Church split in a theological dispute, the remaining
Episcopalians…are learning that a church is more than a building.
"You definitely feel the Holy Spirit moving through the place," said Matt Rhodes, who joined the parish with his wife and two young daughters about six months [ago]…. "There was a tremendous sense of fellowship" and "this overwhelming sense of vitality."
Members of the parish, who now average about 80 in attendance on Sunday, have pledged $250,000 for mission and ministry this year, according to priest-in-charge, the Rev. Michael Pipkin. Ten percent of that budget will go to work with local outreach agencies….
…"the driving focus," as Rhodes called it, is on outreach and how the parishioners can serve the wider community of Falls Church, Virginia.

The Emmanuel Outreach Committee is sponsoring a Linen Drive to benefit the residents of Oak Grove Assisted Living Lodge. Parishioners and friends may participate by donating blankets, quilts, and sheets for the twin beds at Oak Grove. Collection boxes have been placed in the Narthex and the Parish Hall. The Linen Drive will continue through January after which all donations will be delivered to Oak Grove.
Oak Grove is a non-profit assisted living facility housing approximately 52 men and women from all over Virginia. The facility is staffed 24/7 and supported by residents' Social Security checks and private donations. All donations are greatly appreciated.
