This week, G2R concluded its study of Phyllis Tickle’s The Great Emergence with a discussion of “Where is it going?”
Where is authority in the Christian community to come from in the future?
Historically, authority has emanated first, from the 12 Apostles, then the monasteries and finally the papacy. With the Reformation, Christians moved to sola scriptura, Scripture and only Scripture, as the basis for Christian authority.
Our current cultural context demands that Christianity be practiced as part of a global conversation on the plane of all humankind. Everyone is entitled to their views, their opinions and beliefs, and consideration of their preferences in forms of worship.
The Episcopal Church is uniquely positioned to respond to this emerging and diverse Christian community through our tripartite focus on:
Scripture,
Tradition, and
Reason.
